Depardieu, Gérard (1948- )

French actor. His combination of an imposing physique with gentleness and humility won him international acclaim as the eponymous hero in Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), a performance for which he received the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actor as well as an Academy Award nomination.

Well known in France since the early 1970s, Depardieu gained international fame for his performance in the highly successful Jean de Florette (1985).

His other films include Les Valseuses/Going Places (1974), Novecento/1900 (1977), Le Camion/The Truck (1977), Buffet Froid/Cold Buffet (1979), Le Dernier métro/The Last Metro (1980), Le Retour de Martin Guerre/The Return of Martin Guerre (1981), Camille Claudel (1988), Hélas Pour Moi/Woe Is Me (1993), Le Colonel Chabert (1994), and Vatel (2000). His English-speaking films include the US romantic comedy Green Card (1990) and Ridley Scott's 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (1992).
