Depardieu, Gérard (1948– )French actor. His combination of an imposing physique with gentleness and humility won him international acclaim as the eponymous hero in Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), a performance for which he received the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actor as well as an Academy Award nomination. Well known in France since the early 1970s, Depardieu gained international fame for his performance in the highly successful Jean de Florette (1985).
