Gers

River in France, 178 km/110 mi in length; it rises in the Lannemezan Plateau and flows north to join the River Garonne 8 km/5 mi above Agen. It gives its name to the département of Gers in the Midi-Pyrénées region.

Gers

Département in the Midi-Pyrénées region of southwest France; area 6,254 km/2,416 sq mi; population (1999 est) 172,300. It contains sections of the foothills of the Pyrenees and is drained by many rivers, including the Gers, Baise, Save, and Gimone. Vines are extensively grown, primarily for distillation into Armagnac brandy. Cereals, vegetables, fruit, and tobacco are also produced. Stock raising (horses, cattle, and poultry) is important. The principal towns are Auch (the capital), Condom, and Mirande.

Gers was formed from part of the ancient province of Gascony.
