Saône-et-Loire

Département in the Burgundy region of France; area 8,565 sq km/3,307 sq mi; population (1999 est) 544,900. The River Saône flows through the east, and is connected by the Canal du Centre to the River Loire in the west. Wheat and oats grow on the plains, and the hilly district on the east bank of the Saône is a centre of the Burgundy wine trade. There is much industry around the coal basins of Autun and Montceau-les-Mines, and ironworks at Le Creusot. Cattle and poultry are bred in many parts. The administrative centre is Mâcon. Other towns include Autun and Chalon-sur-Saône.

Saône-et-Loire is formed from part of the former province of Burgundy.
