dot

In music, a dot above or under a note normally indicates staccato. Uses other than this are: (a) in 18th-century violin music, a series of dots with a slur indicates notes to be detached without changing the bow; (b) in 18th-century clavichord music, a series of dots with a slur above or under a single note indicates repeated pressure on the key; (c) in older French music, dots above or under a succession of quavers or semi-quavers could mean the observance of equal note-values (notes égales), as opposed to the current fashion of lengthening or shortening such notes alternately (notes inégales).

A dot to the right of a note normally lengthens it by half. See dotted notes.
