Haute-Marne

Département in the Champagne-Ardenne region of northeast France; area 6,215 sq km/2,400 sq mi; population (1999 est) 194,900. Haute-Marne is extensively forested. The soil is mostly poor, but cereals and vines are cultivated in places. There are iron-ore mines and mineral springs. The principal towns are the departmental capital, Chaumont, and Langres and St-Dizier.

The centre of Haute-Marne consists of the plateau of Langres, the highest point being Haut-du-Sac (516 m/1,693 ft) in the southwest. The low-lying country forming the remainder of the département is called the Bassigny. The district contains the upper river basins of the Marne, Ourcq, and Aube, tributaries of the Seine, the Meuse, and some small tributaries of the Rhône.

Haute-Marne was formed mainly from the southeast part of Champagne, together with parts of Burgundy, Lorraine, and Franche-Comté.
