Derbent

Town on the northwestern shore of the Caspian Sea, 110 km/68 mi southeast of Makhachkala, and the second industrial and cultural centre of the Republic of Dagestan; population (1990) 79,000.

Derbent has an ancient citadel, a long defensive wall, and several mosques. It was founded in the 6th century by the Persians, and has been Russian since 1813. It once lay on an important land trade route between Europe and Asia, and is still a centre for the trade in carpets.
