Derby

Coastal town in northern Australia, 2,391 km/1,486 mi north of Perth; population (1996) 3,200. Industries today include cattle, fishing, and tourism.

The area around Derby was first explored by settlers in 1879, and cattle were introduced in 1885. The town was proclaimed in 1883, and was the main port for the pastoral industry.
