goitre

Enlargement of the thyroid gland seen as a swelling on the neck. It is most pronounced in simple goitre, which is caused by iodine deficiency. More common is toxic goitre or hyperthyroidism, caused by overactivity of the thyroid gland.

According to a World Health Organization survey of 1997 up to 60% of people in some Indian states were suffering with goitre.
