Dercum, Francis Xavier

    0.04 sec.

Dercum, Francis Xavier (1856–1931)

US neurologist who did pioneering work in the clinical treatment of mental disorders.

Dercum was born in Philadelphia. In 1888 he described the condition now known as ‘Dercum's disease’, which produces painful deposits of fat under the skin (Adiposis dolorosa). His chief works are Clinical Manual of Mental Diseases, 1913; Biology of the Internal Secretions, 1924; and Physiology of the Mind, 1925. Modern treatment of certain organic diseases of the brain owes much to Dercum's identification of the relationship between such diseases and the endocrine glands.
