Deringer, Henry, Jr

    0.20 sec.

Deringer, Henry, Jr (1786-1868)

US gunsmith. He made rifles for the US Office of Indian Trade, and his pocket pistol, the ‘Deringer Phila’, found a ready market, especially on the frontier. Its success allowed him to invest in real estate and coal land holdings.

Born in Easton, Pennsylvania, the son of a German gunmaker, he served his apprenticeship in Richmond, Virginia, and then opened his own shop in Philadelphia. The ‘Derringer’ (the extra ‘r’ was inserted by mistake) became infamous when John Wilkes Booth it to assassinate President Lincoln.
