Des Moines

River flowing through Iowa and Minnesota, USA; length 861 km/535 mi. It rises in forks in southwest Minnesota, which converge south of Dakota City in Iowa, passes through the city of Des Moines and the Red Rock Reservoir, and joins the Mississippi near Keokuk, Iowa.

A chief tributary is the East Fork River, which rises in Martin County, in southwest Minnesota; length 193 km/120 mi. It flows southeast and south into Iowa to join the main river near Humboldt. The Boone and Raccoon rivers are also important tributaries. The river was set up as a canoe and kayak trail, stretching 404 mi/646 km from Estherville to Keokuk.
