Now, two Australian companies, Energetech and H2AU, have joined forces to test a desalinization plant that is run on wave energy in Port Kembla harbor. In addition to contributing pallets of food, medicine, and bottled water, Bonhomme Richard's desalinization plants produced more than 30,000 gallons of fresh water each day, which sailors and Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) put into containers to distribute to tsunami victims. As drought conditions in some areas of the country and development pressures in others strain freshwater supplies, more and more desalinization plants are coming on line, allowing humans to "drink from the ocean. |
