Desert Storm, Operation

Code-name of the military action to eject the Iraqi army from Kuwait during 1991. The build-up phase was code-named Operation Desert Shield and lasted from August 1990, when Kuwait was first invaded by Iraq, to January 1991 when Operation Desert Storm was unleashed, starting the Gulf War. Desert Storm ended with the defeat of the Iraqi army in the Kuwaiti theatre of operations in late February 1991. The cost of the operation was $53 billion.
