Dessau

City in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on the River Mulde, 115 km/70 mi southwest of Berlin; population (2005 est) 78,400. It is the former capital of Anhalt duchy and state. It manufactures chemicals, machinery, and chocolate and was the site of the Junkers aeroplane works.

The Bauhaus school of art was based in Dessau 1925-33. A Kurt Weill Festival is held in Dessau each year (February-March).
