Destouches, André(-Cardinal) (1672–1749)

French composer. A sailor at first, and then a musketeer, he studied with Campra and produced his first stage work, Issé, in 1697. He held various court appointments and was director of the Opéra 1728–31.

operas Amadis de Crèce (1699), Marthésie, Omphale, Callirhoé, Télémaque et Calypso (1714), Sémiramis (1718), Les Stratagèmes de l'Amour; heroic pastoral Issé; comedy-ballet Le Carnaval et la folie; ballet Les Eléments (with Lalande, 1721), cantatas (Enone) and Sémélé.
