Destrehan

Town in St Charles Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (1990) 8,000. It is located 26 km/16 mi west of New Orleans. Long agricultural, it is now also industrial and suburban, and tripled in population in the 1980s. Named for the owner of a late-18th-century plantation, Destrehan is noted for a 1787 building thought to be the oldest European habitation in the lower Mississippi valley.
