Deutscher Werkbund

German design reform organization set up 1907 to promote high standards of design within manufacturing industry.

Membership covered a wide spectrum of people involved in design in different capacities, among them a number of key architect-designers such as Peter Behrens and Henry Van de Velde (1863–1957). The emphasis was upon the need for a rational, standardized, democratic, modern design movement which could align itself with industrial production. It provided a model which was emulated widely in many other countries.
