Deux-Sèvres

Département in the Poitou-Charentes region of France; area 6,004 sq km/2,318 sq mi; population (1999 est) 344,400. The rivers Sèvre-Niortaise and Sèvre-Nantaise flow through the département. In the north, centre, and west the land is marshy, though parts have been drained. The south is a limestone plain. Cereals, sugar beet, and vines are produced. Horses, cattle, and a particular breed of mule are raised, and there is much wildfowl. There are some textile industries. The principal towns are Niort (the administrative centre), Bressuire, and Parthenay.

Deux-Sèvres is formed from parts of the former provinces of Poitou, Angoumois, and Saintonge.
