Devil's Wall, The

Opera by Bedřich Smetana (libretto by E Krasnohorska), first produced at the Czech Theatre, Prague, on 29 January 1882. It is Smetana's last completed opera. In it, Javek searches for a wife for Vok, but Beneš wants him to stay single and thereby receive Vok's inheritance. The Devil, in league with Beneš, tries to drown Vok in a monastery but the beautiful Hedvika warns Vok. Beneš repents, and Vok marries Hedvika.
