Devlin, Michael (1942– )

American bass-baritone. He made his opera debut as Spalanzi in Hoffmann at New Orleans, in 1963, and sang with the New York City Opera 1966–78, making his debut in Ginastera's Don Rodrigo. His UK debut was at Glyndebourne in 1974, as Mozart's Count, and he appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1977, as Don Giovanni. He first sang at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1978, as Escamillo, and followed this by the Hoffmann villains. He sang in Santa Fe from 1972, in Reimann's Melusine and in Strauss's Ägyptische Helena and Friedenstag.
