Dew, John (1944- )

British stage director. He studied with Felsenstein and Wieland Wagner and directed Mozart and Wagner cycles at Krefeld. He was head of production at Bielefeld from 1981, with challenging work on 20th-century operas: Schreker's Irrelohe, Hindemith's Neues vom Tage, and Brand's Maschinist Hopkins. He directed the premiere of Neikrug's Alamos at Berlin for the Deutsche Oper in 1988, and his updated Huguenots was seen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1991. At the Vienna Staatsoper, in 1994, he produced I Puritani. He staged the premiere of Schnittke's Historia von Dr Johann Fausten in Hamburg in 1995.
