Dewsbury

Town in West Yorkshire, England, on the River Calder; population (2001) 34,600. Dewsbury is a textile-manufacturing town; industries include blanket-making, carpet-making, engineering, and dyeing. Dewsbury dates from the early Middle Ages.

Among the public buildings are the parish church of All Saints, with some remains of Early English Gothic architecture (rebuilt in the 18th century), the town hall (1888), the Wheelwright grammar schools, a covered market and an extensive open market.

The Roman missionary Paulinus is believed to have preached Christianity to the Saxons on the site of the parish church in 627.
