Dhahran

City in eastern Saudi Arabia near the Gulf coast, opposite Bahrain Island; population (1993) 73,700. It was used as a military base during the Gulf War of 1991.

The administrative headquarters of Aramco (Arabian–American Oil Company), holders of the major concessions, and of the Saudi government railroad, it is connected with the Abqaiq oilfields by pipelines and is on the railway from Damman to Riyadh. There is an airport, and a Petroleum and Mineral Institute was opened in 1964.
