DhofarMountainous southwestern governorate of Oman, on the border with Yemen; population (1993) 189,100. South Yemen supported left-wing guerrilla activity here against the Oman government in the 1970s, while Britain and Iran supported the government's military operations. China was supportive of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Oman and the Arab Gulf, which won control of most of Dhofar, Oman's southernmost region, from 1968 to 1974. I had arrived in southern Oman by ship, and as I was making the short drive to the city of Salalah (the capital of Dhofar province), I soon saw camels everywhere I looked. Salim bin Faraj Abdoun, director-general of Environment and Water Resources in the Omani Governorate of Dhofar, has announced the government's intention to set up several new nature reserves in the southern region of the governorate. |
