Di Stefano, Giuseppe (1921–2008)

Italian tenor. He sang at La Scala in Milan from 1947, and at the New York Metropolitan Opera House 1948–65, making his debut as the Duke of Mantua. He appeared in Edinburgh in 1957 as Nemorino, and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1961 as Cavaradossi. He sang in Italian repertory, and also as Faust, Nadir, Massenet's Des Grieux, and Don José. He frequently collaborated with Maria Callas during the 1950s. In his prime, he was noted for his discretion and vocal elegance.
