Diamantina

Mining town in the Minas Gerais state in Brazil, 500 km/311 mi north of Rio de Janeiro; population (1996) 43,405. Founded in 1729, it was once the centre of the diamond industry and gold is still mined in the vicinity. Diamantina has tanning and textile industries, and contains some fine colonial buildings.

Diamantina was the birthplace of the Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek (1956–61), who founded the new capital city of Brasília. There is now a diamond museum in the town, the Museo do Diamante.

River in Australia; length 800 km/497 mi. It rises in western Queensland, where it is fed by monsoonal rains, and runs mainly as a braided channel before flooding out in Goyders Lagoon, an extensive seasonal swamp 80 km/50 mi downstream from Birdsville. When full the lagoon overflows into Warburton Creek, which meanders around the Simpson Desert before reaching Lake Eyre in central South Australia.
