Diamond, David Leo (1915–2005)

US composer. His works are written in a neoclassical style and include Rounds (1944) for string orchestra.

He studied at the Eastman School of Music at Rochester and later at the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, France, with Nadia Boulanger. After his return to the USA he was awarded several composition prizes.

Works

Orchestral

11 symphonies (1941–89), sinfonietta, serenade, variations, Psalm for orchestra (1936), Elegy in Memory of Ravel (1938) and ballet suite Tom for orchestra; concerto and Rounds for string orchestra (1944); violin concerto (1936–67), Hommage à Satie and ballade for chamber orchestra, concertos for piano, cello, and violin (2) with chamber orchestra.

Vocal

A Night Litany (Ezra Pound) for chorus and three madrigals for unaccompanied chorus (James Joyce), Choral Symphony: To Music (1967); A Secular Cantata (1976).

Chamber

ten string quartets (1943–76), string trio; sonatina for violin and piano, cello and piano sonata, partita for bassoon and piano; sonata and sonatina for piano; 52 preludes and fugues for piano.
