Winterreise

Song cycle by Schubert, based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. It falls into two parts, composed in February 1827 and October 1827 respectively.

The 24 songs are 1. ‘Gute Nacht’; 2. ‘Die Wetterfahne’; 3. ‘Gefrorne Tränen’; 4. ‘Erstarrung’; 5. ‘Der Lindenbaum’; 6. ‘Wasserflut’; 7. ‘Auf dem Flusse’; 8. ‘Rückblick’; 9. ‘Irrlicht’; 10. ‘Rast’; 11. ‘Frühlingstraum’; 12. ‘Einsamkeit’; 13. ‘Die Post’; 14. ‘Der greise Kopf’; 15. ‘Die Krähe’; 16. ‘Letzte Hoffnung’; 17. ‘Im Dorfe’; 18. ‘Der stürmische Morgen’; 19. ‘Täuschung’; 20. ‘Der Wegweiser’; 21. ‘Das Wirtshaus’; 22. ‘Mut’; 23. ‘Die Nebensonnen’; 24. ‘Der Leiermann’.

In addition to these two, current releases in the series include Britten's edition of Mozart's Idomeneo (Decca: 074 3258), starring Pears in the tide role, and a performance of Schubert's Die Winterreise and Britten folksong arrangements (Decca 074 3257).
The duo gave a memorable performance of Schubert's Die Winterreise in St Mary's Church, Warwick, last year.
Other notable vocal events are Ann Murray with Sinfonia Viva in Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder, Mark Padmore singing Die Winterreise, with pianist Paul Lewis, and baritone James Rutherford in English songs, including Butterworth's
