Thionville

Capital of the French département of Moselle, 25 km/16 mi north of Metz, on the River Moselle; population (1990) 41,500. It has large iron- and steelworks, and manufactures chemicals. Imperial diets (meetings of the estates of the Holy Roman Empire) were held here in the 8th century.
