Diemen, Anthony van

Diemen, Anthony van (1593–1645)

Dutch admiral. In 1636 he was appointed governor general of Dutch settlements in the East Indies, and wrested Ceylon and Malacca (now Melaka) from the Portuguese. In 1636 and 1642 he supervised expeditions to Australia, on the second of which the navigator Abel Tasman discovered land not charted by Europeans and named it Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania.
