The differential lies midway between the driving wheels of a motorcar. When the car is turning, the bevel pinions spin, allowing the outer wheel to turn faster than the inner wheel.

Arrangement of gears in the final drive of a vehicle's transmission system that allows the driving wheels to turn at different speeds when cornering. The differential consists of sets of bevel gears and pinions within a cage attached to the crown wheel. When cornering, the bevel pinions rotate to allow the outer wheel to turn faster than the inner.
