Lagoon Nebula

Bright nebula in the constellation of Sagittarius. It is about 4,000 light years from the Sun and about 50 (times) 100 light years across. It is an HII region (a region of extremely hot ionized hydrogen) on the edge of a molecular cloud in which stars are being formed, and contains the open cluster NGC 6530. It is also known as Messier 8 (M8).
