Digby

Town and administrative headquarters of Digby County, west Nova Scotia, Canada; population (1991) 2,300. It is situated on the Annapolis Basin off the Bay of Fundy, 160 km/100 mi west of Halifax. The 65 km/40 mi–long Digby Neck peninsula extends southwest, separating St Mary's Bay, to the south, from the Bay of Fundy. The town is the terminus of a ferry from St John, New Brunswick, and a port and service centre. It has one of the largest scallop fishing fleets in the world, and produces other seafood, especially smoked herring. There are local pulpwood and lumber industries, and tourism is central to the local economy.
