Dillon, Matt(hew Raymond) (1964– )

US actor. In the 1980s he was well-known as a teen heartthrob for his troubled adolescent roles in films such as Francis Ford Coppola's adaptations The Outsiders (1983) and Rumble Fish (1983). His transition to adult roles had mixed results, but he had several critical and commercial successes and received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as a police sergeant in Paul Haggis's racially charged Academy Award-winning drama Crash (2005).

Dillon's first major role was in the controversial drama Over the Edge, a film about suburban teens which inspired the successful video for the grunge band Nirvana's hit single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Troubled teen roles in My Bodyguard (1980), Tex (1982), and The Flamingo Kid (1984) followed. He appeared in several poorly received romantic comedies during the late 1980s and 1990s but had successes with his roles in Gus van Sant's drug crime drama Drugstore Cowboy (1989) and thriller To Die For (1995), as well as in the erotic thriller Wild Things (1998) and the Farrelly brothers' comedy There's Something About Mary (1998). He wrote, directed, and starred in the Cambodian-set drama City of Ghosts (2002).
