Dimitrij

Opera by Antonín Dvořàk (libretto by M Červinková-Riegerová), first produced at the Czech Theatre, Prague, on 8 October 1882. The subject is the ‘false Dimitri’, the pretender who also figures in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. Having assumed the throne, Tsar Dmitrij marries Marina and then falls in love with Xenie. Jealous, Marina reveals that Dmitrij is in fact the son of a peasant. The opera ends when Prince Šujský shoots him.
