Dimsdale, Thomas (1712-1800)

English physician and politician who won worldwide fame for his skill in inoculation. As reward for successfully inoculating herself and her son, Catherine (II) the Great of Russia made him a baron and gave him a fee of £12,000 and a life pension.

Dimsdale was born at Theydon Gernon, Essex. His Thoughts on General and Partial Inoculations, 1776, was translated into many languages. He sat as the MP for Hertford from 1780-90.
