Dindings, The

    0.06 sec.

Dindings, The

Strip of land in Peninsular Malaysia, on the southwest coast of Perak. It is 35 km/22 mi long and 13 km/8 mi wide, comprising also the island of Pangkor. The chief town is Lumut, a deepwater port and site of Malaysia's main naval base. It is now part of the administrative division of Manjung.

Formerly part of Penang state, the Dindings were annexed by Britain and made part of the Straits Settlements after 1874. They were returned to Perak in 1935, partly for convenience of customs collection, and partly in recognition of the loyalty of the Sultan of Perak to the British Crown.
