Dinsmoor, William Bell

Dinsmoor, William Bell (1887–1973)

US classical archaeologist. A Harvard graduate, he became a student, then excavator and restorer at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, before teaching at Columbia University. His book, Architecture of Greece (1950), is considered definitive.

He was born in Windham, New Hampshire. During his career at Columbia University, he was a professor of architecture, then archaeology. He was chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Treasures in War Areas during World War II.
