Wiener Neustadt

Austrian city in the province of Lower Austria, 40 km/25 mi south of Vienna; population (2001) 37,600. Industries include automobiles, engineering, aircraft, brewing; leather goods are produced.

The Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I was born in the city and is buried in the castle chapel (12th century). The Liebfrauenkirche (Romanesque and Gothic) was formerly a cathedral. Most of the city was destroyed in World War II.
