Dire Dawa

Town in the Oromo region in central Ethiopia, situated in the Great Rift Valley; population (2006 est) 281,800. Although situated in the Oromo region, Dire Dawa is administered separately from the rest of the region. Located on an ancient caravan route and modern railway line from Djibouti to Addis Ababa, it is the chief market centre for the province, although the surrounding area is infertile. Local industries include textiles, cement, and food processing. Near the town are caves with prehistoric rock paintings. The Alemaya University of Agriculture is located in the town.
