direct connection

In computing, connection between two computers via cable to transfer files without the intermediary of a network or online service. Each computer must be running communications software using the same protocols for file transfers. If the computers are in the same room, they can be connected using a special type of serial cable known as a null modem cable; if they are connected via telephone lines each must have a modem so that one can dial the other.

There are several software packages designed for this purpose; one of the market leaders is Laplink.
