DirectX

Programming interface developed by Microsoft to simplify the problem of writing programs to use the wide variety of graphics hardware – particularly the number of different 3-D graphics cards – found in personal computers. Programmers can write to the DirectX software layer, which in effect converts these general instructions into the commands required by specific pieces of hardware.
