displaced persons

Originally, refugees left without a home country by the border changes arising from World War II; later the term was also used to describe the millions of refugees who had been uprooted by the war and transported elsewhere, so that they had no home to which they could return.

Huge camps were established in Germany and other parts of Europe, into which displaced persons were shepherded so that they could be fed, housed, documented, and eventually resettled in the destination of their choice.
