Dissenter

In Britain, former name for a Protestant refusing to conform to the established Christian church. For example, Baptists, Presbyterians, and Independents (now known as Congregationalists) were Dissenters.

I don't see why you should have been so surprised because I was a dissenter.
A peasant would run away, a fashionable dissenter would run away, the flunkey of another man's thought, for you've only to show him the end of your little finger and he'll be ready to believe in anything for the rest of his life.
But now he may be no better than a Dissenter, and want to push aside my son on pretence of doctrine.
