Fort Dix

Military complex in Burlington County, south-central New Jersey; population (1990) 10,200. It is located 24 km/15 mi southeast of Trenton, on the north edge of the Pine Barrens. Active-duty training at Fort Dix ended in 1992; this had an immediate impact on the economies of such nearby communities as Wrightstown and Pemberton.

Fort Dix was established in 1917 as Camp Dix. It was the largest US training centre in World War II. McGuire Air Force Base, to the northwest, is one of the major US military airfields; population (1990) 7,600. Lakehurst Naval Air Station adjoins to the east.
