Dixon

Town in Solano County, north-central California; population (1990) 10,400. It is situated in the Sacramento Valley, 32 km/20 mi west-southwest of Sacramento. It is a trade centre in a diversified farming region.

Dixon

Town and administrative headquarters of Lee County, northwest Illinois; population (1990) 15,100. It is located on the Rock River, 58 km/36 mi southwest of Rockford. It is the commercial centre of an agricultural area, and cement and electrical equipment are produced here.

It was in Dixon that John Dixon began a ferry service and tavern in 1830, along the Peoria-Galena mail route. Two years later, Fort Dixon was built as a base during the Black Hawk War; the Lincoln Monument State Memorial now marks its site. Ronald Reagan's boyhood home here has been restored and is open to the public. White Pines State Forest is 13 km/8 mi to the north.
