| It was in Dixon that John Dixon began a ferry service and tavern in 1830, along the Peoria–Galena mail route. Two years later, Fort Dixon was built as a base during the Black Hawk War; the Lincoln Monument State Memorial now marks its site. Ronald Reagan's boyhood home here has been restored and is open to the public. White Pines State Forest is 13 km/8 mi to the north. |
