Dlugosz, John (1415–1480)

Polish historian and cleric. Among his many works, the most famous is his History of Poland, first published in 1701–02.

Dlugosz studied in Kraków and became a skilled ecclesiastical administrator. After serving as secretary to Cardinal-Bishop Olesnicki of Kraków 1431–55, he was employed by King Casimir IV as a diplomat 1454–66 and as a tutor to his sons. Before his death, Dlugosz was nominated archbishop of Lwów (modern Lviv).
