Dmytryk, Edward

    0.02 sec.

Dmytryk, Edward (1908–1999)

Canadian-born US film director. He was one of the Hollywood Ten who fell foul of the anti-communist witch-hunts in the 1940s. By then he had made the early films noirs Murder, My Sweet/Farewell, My Lovely (1944), Cornered (1945), and Crossfire (1947), in which he tackled the issue of anti-Semitism.

Dmytryk was an accomplished film-maker, beginning as an editor in 1930. He directed several films later in the decade, before being imprisoned for his political beliefs. He was not removed from the blacklist until he had in turn incriminated others in the early 1950s. Later films included The Sniper (1952), The Caine Mutiny (1954), The Left Hand of God (1955), and The Young Lions (1958). He also published a number of books on the craft of film-making.
