Dnipropetrovs'k

City in Ukraine, on the right bank of the River Dnieper and capital of an oblast (region) of the same name; population (2001) 1,065,000. It is the centre of a major industrial region, with iron, steel, chemical, and engineering industries. The city draws much of its power from the Dneproges Dam, 60 km/37 mi downstream.

Dnipropetrovs'k was founded by Grigory Potemkin in 1786, as Ekaterinoslav (‘Catherine's glory’) in honour of Catherine (II) the Great. It kept this name until 1926. The city was occupied by German forces (1941–43).
